Chipolo is designed as a finder for lost or misplaced items, not a tracker for stolen ones. While it can sometimes help you recover a stolen item, we do not recommend relying on it for anti-theft purposes for two main reasons:
- To prevent misuse (like stalking), both Apple (Find My) and Google (Find Hub) have built-in safety features for unwanted tracking. If a thief steals your bag with a Chipolo inside and travels with it, their phone may eventually alert them that an unknown tracker is moving with them. This allows the thief to find and disable the Chipolo.
- Chipolo relies on Bluetooth technology and the network of other phones to update its location - it does not have a built-in GPS tracker. If a stolen item is taken to a remote area where no other phones are present, the location will not update.
