This article does not apply to Chipolos that are paired in the Apple Find My app.
Out of Range alerts are a Chipolo app feature that sends a notification to your phone whenever one of your Chipolos moves out of range.
To ensure this feature works properly, please make sure the Chipolo app on your device is updated to the latest version.
When enabled, these notifications trigger a short alert on your phone to let you know you’ve lost the connection to your Chipolo in time to turn back and retrieve it. Out of Range alerts are set up individually for each Chipolo in the Chipolo app and can be turned on or off at any time.
Enabling Out of Range Alerts
Out of Range alerts are enabled by default.
To enable or disable Out of Range alerts for a specific Chipolo, follow these steps:
- Open the Chipolo app.
- Tap the Chipolo for which you want to enable or disable Out of Range alerts.
- On the next screen, tap the Out of Range Alerts tab.
- Use the toggle switch to enable or disable the alerts.
Notification volume
When you lose the connection to your Chipolo, your phone will play a short ring and display a brief text notification from the Chipolo app.
The volume of Out of Range alerts follows your phone’s ringtone and notification settings. This means that if your phone is set to silent mode, you may not hear an audible alert.
Range
Since the connection relies on Bluetooth technology, it’s not possible to set an exact range (this is only possible with GPS trackers). The alert is typically triggered when the distance reaches between 100 and 400 feet (30–120 meters), depending on your surroundings and the Chipolo model you’re using.
In most situations, the alert is triggered after about a minute or once you’ve moved a few hundred meters away. For example, you may receive the notification by the time you reach your car in a parking lot. The exact timing can vary from person to person.
Because Bluetooth connections can occasionally be brief or unstable, the system checks additional factors (such as how far your phone has physically moved and whether you’ve left a trusted Wi-Fi network) before sending an alert. This results in a short delay but significantly reduces the likelihood of false alerts when your Chipolo is still nearby.
Out of Range Alerts and shared Chipolos
Unfortunately, at this time, it is not possible to enable Out of Range alerts for shared Chipolos.
