With both iOS and Android, it’s the operating system of the telephone that calculates the location. They both calculate the location using a combination of Wi-Fi + GPS and obstacles like walls, doors, and even thick clouds can add some error to these calculations.
When the calculation is done, the map takes over and finds the nearest location to the specific latitude and longitude. Chipolo does not use its own maps, but instead uses one of the installed map apps, like Google maps or Apple maps. Since maps are sometimes outdated or inaccurate, errors can again occur here too.
In rare cases where both the initial location calculation and the map are off, it is possible for the location to be off by as much as a few 100 meters (more than 330 ft).
If the location is off by several kilometers or miles, please check that the connection between your Chipolo and the app is active, or double check that the location displayed on the map is not an old one.
